Our family was introduced to
adaptive aquatics by
Family Support.
At that time our son, Andrew, could
not alternate his feet going down
stairs. My husband and I were
hopeful that Andrew would adapt to
the water and possibly learn to
swim. We did not dream of all the
hidden joys that have happened for
him since he started adaptive
aquatics.
My husband and I would have been
very proud and happy just to have
our son get in the water and not be
fearful and for us as parents not to
panic that he was going to drown.
Our son has been swimming for less
than one year and has also joined
Special Olympics as well. During our
son’s adaptive aquatics lesson, he
is less fearful of the water, is
able to put his face in the water,
can swim for short distances without
a safety belt and alternate kicking
his feet and hands.
Another added
bonus he is learning socialization
skills by interacting with others.
It has been most helpful as parents
to have someone to bounce ideas and
questions off of as we are able to
do with our Family Support contact
at South Dakota Achieve. Thank you
for opportunities that are available
to special children like our son. It
has opened up a new world for him.
