On the Road to Achieving a Dream

Story composed by Sue VandeKamp, Lead Support Professional

James sustained a traumatic brain injury at the age of 15 from a motor vehicle accident. As a result of his brain injury, James struggles with impulsivity, focus and logic. In February 2010, James identified that one of his goals was to obtain his SD driver’s license. Shortly after, we started the process by picking up a Driver’s Manual at the Department of Motor Vehicles and finding some online practice tests for James to work on.

Because of his injury, James required medical clearance from his doctor prior to pursuing his license. James completed his medical testing in June, 2011 and was excited to learn that he had been cleared medically based on his test results. James continued to study his manual and took the practice tests online. James even enrolled in Driver’s Safety courses through the South Dakota Safety Council in order to build his skills and confidence.

Even after a couple of failed written exams, James remained focused and determined to achieve his goal. On October 13, 2011, James passed his written exam, and obtained his Learner’s Permit, having missed only three questions on the test. James called his family to let them know about his accomplishment, and everyone was very supportive and excited for James.

James went driving with his brother and other family members, but identified on his own that he wasn’t comfortable driving and asked that I help him set up some additional driving sessions with the SD Safety Council. James has taken three two hour driving lessons so far, and plans to continue until he feels comfortable and ready to take the driving portion of his test.

James would like to obtain his driver’s license by July of 2012. He is a very determined young man; he has worked very hard to get to this point in the process. I have a lot of faith in James and I will continue to encourage him to be patient and follow the appropriate steps needed to make this dream come true.

I started working for South Dakota Achieve in July 2007 as a Support Professional. In March 2008, I was promoted to the Lead Position at the Terry House. In September 2008, I accepted the role of Traumatic Brain Injury Day Service Instructor at Kilian Community College. I have begun taking steps to become a Certified Brain Injury Specialist. The men at Terry and Kilian Community College have been amazing. They have given me a passion to understand brain injury and how the brain works in more depth.
